Another Hollywood divorce

The world is once again witnessing the public separation and divorce of another Hollywood couple. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, nicknamed “Brangelina” married in 2014, 10 years after meeting on the set of 2005 film Mr& Mrs Smith. Jolie who is 41, filed for divorce from Pitt who is 52, citing irreconcilable differences within the court paperwork. She is also looking to make sure that she remains the day-to-day carer for their six children, with Brad having a contact arrangement in place to see them. Her lawyer, Robert Offer, said the decision had been made “for the health of the family”. The world is yet to see whether this couple can manage to negotiate an amicable financial settlement or whether the matter is to become bitter and played out in the press.

What will be the same for Brangelina as it is for every separating couple is that the decision to divorce is never an easy one and there is no such thing as a “quick divorce”. A range of emotions are played out by both parties as they come to terms with the fact that they are no longer with the person they once loved and are entering a new chapter in their lives on their own. This can be a scary prospect, especially if they are not sure what legal entitlements they have or how they can claim these. It is important for anyone experiencing separation or divorce to seek expert legal advice as early as possible. At Barker Gotelee we offer a free consultation with one of our experienced family solicitors who can act as a guide through the process and work out the best options to take.
