Barker Gotelee’s part in saving Boxster the Bull is now in print!

The story of Hallmark Boxster, the prize-winning Yorkshire bull saved from death after an 18-month wrangle, has now been printed in Boxster’s Story: The Truth Behind the Bull by Kate McNeil with Chris Berry (Jeremy Mills Publishing Ltd).

The Champion British Blonde bull, Hallmark Boxster, won his category in every show he entered in 2009. After a gamma interferon test for Bovine TB gave a “marginal indication” that Boxster was a TB carrier, DEFRA wanted him to be slaughtered. The Jackson family, who owned Boxster, maintained that the tests had been incorrectly carried out and fought the slaughter order issued in April 2010 by the Leeds Animal Health Division. The department argued in court its breach of procedure was trivial and irrelevant. The Jacksons consulted solicitors, including Barker Gotelee’s Richard Barker, to fight the slaughter order.

In April, a High Court judge ruled DEFRA had broken its own rules by mixing two blood samples and its diagnosis was invalid. Boxster was formally declared free of the disease in August 2011. You can read all about it in the new book, which “…tells the highs and lows faced by the family, the tears and laughter and the truth behind the bull“.
