‘Lady Hale, the only woman amongst the twelve Supreme Court Justices, is to become the deputy president. She takes over from Lord Hope who retires on Friday 28 June 2013.
By taking this role, Lady Hale has become the most senior female judge in British legal history. The role will include working alongside Lord Neuberger, the president, to oversee the judicial work of the court and working closely with the mangers of the courts’ administration.
Lady Hale graduated from Cambridge University and then taught law at Manchester University from 1966–1984. Lady Hale qualified as a barrister and practiced at the Manchester bar, specialising in family and social welfare law. In 1984 she was the first woman to be appointed to the Law Commission.
Lord Neuberger, president of the court is reported to have said, ‘Lady Hale brings an exceptional range of experience of almost 20 years as a senior judge, following time spent in academia and law reform work’.’
