Business Solicitors Suffolk – Competition Commission provisionally clears AG Barr and Britvic merger

‘The Competition Commission has given the green light to a merger of AG Barr and Britvic. The final report from the commission is expected to be published on 30 July. The merger was originally announced in September 2012.

Alistair Smith, Competition Commission deputy chairman, who was in charge of the inquiry reported that the wholesale prices of the two brands’ products, which include Tango, Irn-Bru, Orangina and Lipton Iced Tea, would not increase significantly from any merger. He added that inquiries “told us that most consumers tend to see Barr and Britvic brands as distinct products, rather than close substitutes for each other” (BBC News).

If the merger goes ahead it will create one of the biggest drinks companies in Europe with annual sales of more than £1.5bn (The Telegraph).’
