Mediation awareness sessions
The media have widely reported that a change in the law now requires divorcing and separating couples to attend a meeting to find out about mediation. Some media coverage implied that all divorcing couples had to attend this meeting, which is misleading. Only couples who are in a dispute with each other about financial issues or the arrangements for their children have to attend this meeting. Couples who are in agreement with each other do not. The law states that couples must find out about mediation but does not require couples to mediate. However couples who reach agreements in mediation usually find their arrangements easier to stick to than those specified by the court.
