Family Solicitors Ipswich – Government legalises same sex marriage
‘Over the last few months we have been reporting on The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill which has been passing through Parliament in a bid to become law. There have been various discussions and suggested amendments to this Bill and it finally received Royal Assent last Wednesday 17th July. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 now makes it legal for same sex couples to have a civil marriage, and also enables religious organisations to opt in to conduct same sex marriages if they wish to do so. It is predicted that the first same sex wedding could take place by as early as summer 2014. Any same sex couple who has already entered into a Civil Partnership will also be allowed to convert their civil partnership into a marriage.
The Bill, as enacted, has been published and is available to view here.’
