Family Solicitors Suffolk – Children missing out on free school meals
‘A leading children’s charity, The Children’s Society, has revealed shocking news today that over 12,500 children in poverty in Suffolk are missing out on getting a free school meal every day. The Government runs a pupil premium scheme to provide extra funding to schools for each child who is eligible for a free school meal. However The Children’s Society has found that many families in Suffolk (as much as 32%) who could be eligible for free school meals under the scheme have not applied.
Ben Gummer MP for Ipswich, and Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for education and young people, have both spoken out to try and encourage any family who thinks they may be eligible to apply. Parents who think their children are eligible can also apply even if they wish their children to continue having a packed lunch at school. The key message is to make sure the school’s in this county are not missing out on funding for the education of the future generation.’
