Same sex marriage in Australia
Singer Kylie Minogue and her fiancé, English actor Joshua Sasse, have confirmed that although their plan is to get married in Australia they will not do so until the country changes its laws to allow same sex marriage. The couple, who announced their engagement earlier this year, have been vocal supporters of the “Say I Do Down Under” marriage equality campaign. The Australian government has proposed holding a public vote on same sex marriage in February 2017.
Same sex couples in England and Wales have been allowed to marry since just after midnight on 29 March 2014. By October 2015 a total of 15,098 same sex marriages had taken place of which 7,366 were marriages while 7,732 accounted for conversions from civil partnerships to marriage.
