Family Solicitors Ipswich – Your rights if you are not married
‘Recent headlines confirm that a 55 year-old woman walked away with nothing after splitting with her partner of 30 years, despite living and working together at the partner’s boarding and cattery business. The judge could find neither that a business partnership existed, nor that the woman had an entitlement by virtue of living with the gentleman concerned. A report published by the Law Commission in 2007 had suggested that property laws should be reformed to give those cohabiting the same rights as married couples. However the Government announced in 2011 that it had no plans to change the law. To secure the full range of rights on separation, couples must marry and divorce.’
